Over the last seven years I’ve photographed a number of different circus performers and acts, but one of my favourites to work with is Laila Umeko. I first photographed Laila when she was part of the Wellington Youth Circus. She is a regular performer and trainer at the Wellington Circus Hub. Last year she helped choreograph a photoshoot with the talented Elizabeth Bing for me, and later that year we did an awesome photoshoot in the middle of town.
Laila is running away to faraway places. She will be attending the university l’Ecole Superieure des Arts du Cirque in Bruxelles, Belgium and will be the first New Zealander to ever be accepted there. She will be there for three years of full time study and she said to me “this is a dream come true.”
This Saturday, August the 4th Laila is putting on a celebration show and farewell called “Faraway Places” at 11 Hutchison Road at the Wellington Circus Hub,Newtown, The doors open at 8PM, with a suggested koha of $15.00. I’ll be there (to photograph Laila for the last time for the next three years!) and I hope that everyone that follows me can come along to support her as well. She told me that it will be “her greatest pleasure getting on stage for a final time this weekend with a cast of incredible artists who have created contemporary circus and variety acts to knock your socks off!”
And before she goes, just a few photos from the last few years.
